Risky Roads 2008

Thanks for helping us deliver safer roads!

The Risky Roads 2008 campaign received over 500 nominations from the WA community for WA's riskiest roads and intersections.

The RAC uses the information gathered from this and other campaigns to inform and lobby the relevant road authorities to help deliver safer roads for the WA community.

About Risky Roads

Recent research by the RAC has identified that WA has some of the most dangerous sections of highway in Australia.

In fact, there are nearly 1,000kms of sub-standard highway that have been rated with just 2 stars by the Australian Road Assessment Program - a scientific assessment of road design elements which are known to impact on the likelihood of a crash and its severity.

But WA's poor roads aren't just restricted to WA's country highways. There are stretches of regional and metropolitan road that are also unsafe to drive on.

That's why the RAC is running its Risky Roads campaign - to find out what dangerous or risky sections of roads or intersections our members and the wider motoring public use most frequently. Crumbling road edges, poor lighting, inadequate crash barriers, large trees or other objects lining the roads, sharp bends and a lack of overtaking lanes are just some of the dangers that make dangerous or Risky Roads.

With the help of our members and other motorists, the RAC has identified hundreds of Risky Road locations throughout WA's extensive road network.

The State’s 10 riskiest roads according to motorists are:
 1. Great Eastern Highway (notably Belmont, Swan and Mundaring areas);
 2. Reid Highway (notably Stirling and Swan areas);
 3. Great Northern Highway (notably Chittering area);
 4. South Western Highway (notably Manjimup, Serpentine-Jarrahdale, and Dardanup areas);
 5. Wanneroo Road;
 6. Albany Highway (notably Canning and Albany areas);
 7. Scarborough Beach Road;
 8. Gnangara Road;
 9. Roe Highway (notably in Forrestdale);
 10. Brand Highway (notably in Gingin area).
The five worst roads in regional areas according to motorists are:
 1. South Western Highway;
 2. Great Eastern Highway (notably from Southern Cross to Coolgardie);
 3. Great Northern Highway;
 4. Brand Highway;
 5. (tied) Albany Highway & Bussell Highway.
