2012 RAC Community Education Resilient Drivers Program

RAC Community Education is committed to educating Year 10 to 12 students on road safety. Our aim is to influence risk reduction, increase resilience and encourage responsible behaviour to help keep our students safe on the road.

The Resilient Drivers Program consists of several presenter-led, activity-based road safety workshops and a youth road trauma awareness event (bstreetsmart).

All workshops are 45 – 50 minutes in length and are free for groups of 15 or more students. Please note: maximum group sizes apply.

Buying a car – years 11 and 12

Buying your first car is an exciting and memorable moment for any young driver.

This workshop provides students with an opportunity to reflect on the important considerations of purchasing a vehicle. In addition Year 12 students have the opportunity to take advantage of 12 months free Standard Roadside Assistance through the RAC free2go youth membership program.

We discuss:
  • selecting the right mode of transport
  • tips for purchasing a safe vehicle
  • contracts, insurance, registration and REVS check
  • free2go membership

Decade of Action: Road Safety – Years 10 to 12 students

This workshop is the foundation unit of the RAC Resilient Drivers program. The workshop provides students with an understanding of the importance of general road safety and how they can help make our roads safer.

We discuss:
  • the International Decade of Action and the State Towards Zero strategy
  • how different road users (cyclists, pedestrians, passengers and drivers) can take action to help lower the road toll
  • the three impacts which occur in a car crash
No maximum group size

Drink, Drugs and Driving - years 11 & 12

This workshop focuses on the effects of alcohol and drugs whilst driving. Students are given the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and experiment with fatal vision goggles.

We discuss:
  • the effects of alcohol and drugs whilst driving
  • standard drinks and the different effects on individuals
  • the law in regards to alcohol, drugs and driving
Maximum number of participants: 70

My Decisions, My Destination – Year 11 and 12 students

A new activity-based workshop developed for the RAC Resilient Drivers program to increase students understanding of the impacts their driving choices can have on their lives and the lives of those close to them.

We discuss:
  • who is affected by road trauma
  • the aspects of life that can be affected by road trauma
  • the choices people make and how these can impact their lives forever
Prerequisite workshop: Decade of Action, Road Safety

Maximum number of participants: 35

Back seat driver - year 10 students

This workshop highlights the role of young people as passengers in vehicles. It provides an opportunity for students to explore and identify the part they play whilst travelling in a car.

We discuss:
  • the role of passengers in vehicles
  • strategies for travelling safely in vehicles
  • information and activities on speed, seatbelts, fatigue, alcohol & drugs, and distractions

Keys for Life: A Workshop for Parents and Young People – Parents and Year 10 to 12 students

This workshop aims to motivate young people and their parents to works as partners in the learning to drive process, while accumulating extensive hours of supervised driving practice.

The workshop is available to all high schools state-wide and is conducted by the RAC in metropolitan areas and SDERA consultants in regional areas (see sdera.wa.edu.au or phone 9264 4743).

This one hour interactive workshop provides information on:
  • the WA Licensing System – including what to expect in the Practical Driving Assessment
  • the four stages of learning to drive
  • tips for successful and safe driving lessons
  • the role of the supervisor
