Mondeo Australia's best mid-sized car

05 December 2007

The new Ford Mondeo has won the popular mid-size car category (over $28,000) in Australia's Best Cars Awards.

The Mondeo was one of 12 category winners announced at last night's awards ceremony in Melbourne. The awards are judged and presented by the Australian Automobile Association and Australia's auto clubs - RACWA, NRMA Motoring & Services, RACV, RACQ, RAASA, RACT and AANT.

AAA Executive Director, Mike Harris, said Australia's Best Cars Awards judged vehicles in 12 categories and consumer feedback was an important component. This year more than 250 vehicles were assessed before a short list of 36 finalists was drawn.

"These awards are not about the automotive industry - they are about the consumer," Mr Harris said.

"AAA and Australia's auto clubs represent more than 6.5 million members and these awards provide them - and all motorists - with an independent programme that recognises vehicles for the safety, comfort, value for money and other important features they provide drivers and passengers."

RAC Judge, Alby Martin, acknowledged the improvements in cars available on the local market each year and said the Ford Mondeo was a particularly good example of this.

"While the Mondeo name will be familiar to many people, the all-new model comes with class-winning build, comfort and safety features. It has beaten well-established names like the Volkswagen Jetta and Honda Euro," said Mr Martin.

The recreational four wheel drive category was also strongly contested, with Nissan's popular X-trail narrowly beating the Honda CR-V and new Toyota Kluger for line honours.

"These manufacturers are acting on what consumers want from their recreational vehicles and have really lifted the bar in this class," he said.
