RAC and Mayor want Burglar Beware in Geraldton

07 March 2007

The RAC and the City of Geraldton are calling on the State Government to implement the successful Burglar Beware program in Geraldton in 2007.

The Government announced recently that the roll-out of Burglar Beware in the south-east metropolitan region of Perth was being extended, and the RAC believes it is time for Geraldton to be given the same tools and resources to tackle burglary.

"For the last two years we have been calling on the Government to introduce Burglary Beware into the south east and south metropolitan areas, and now we are adding Geraldton to the list," David Moir, Executive Manager - Member Advocacy, said.

Acting Mayor Mr Ian Carpenter agreed saying that his residents deserved to live in a community that was burglary free.

"Over the last twelve months, the City of Geraldton, in conjunction with the local community, has been implementing crime-cutting strategies relating to urban design and we are seeking funds to implement CCTV within hot spots," Mr Carpenter said.

"Burglar Beware, a program that has all the government agencies working together, would be a huge positive for our residents. "From all accounts the pilot programme run in Carnarvon was successful so we know it can operate in a regional centre."

The RAC and the City of Geraldton have agreed to work in partnership to tackle burglary and address anti-social behaviour in Geraldton.

"I am confident that working together, the RAC and the City will be able to bring positive benefits for their members and our residents in Geraldton," Mr Carpenter said.

According to 2006 RAC Insurance claims data, the rate of burglary in the Geraldton suburbs of Rangeway and Spalding were the highest in WA.
