FuelWatch valuable because it gives WA consumers a choice

13 November 2008

The RAC has thrown its support behind WA’s FuelWatch scheme, despite the defeat in the Federal Senate of a proposed national FuelWatch scheme.

RAC Head of Member Advocacy Matt Brown said he expected FuelWatch would continue to run in WA and it was still strongly supported by the RAC.

“The WA FuelWatch scheme empowers consumers because it gives them the opportunity to compare prices, find where the cheapest fuel is and it gives them certainty they can buy it at that price,” he said.

“Our research suggests that many people in WA use FuelWatch and it helps consumers especially at times of high fuel prices.”

Mr Brown said that FuelWatch had been in place in Western Australia for seven years and the RAC’s support was based on analysing its impact in that time.

“FuelWatch works well for consumers in this State and, contrary to some of its opponents’ claims, it has not raised the price of fuel in Perth,” Mr Brown said.

“Our research shows that while FuelWatch does not reduce prices, it does not increase them either.”
