Cape Le Grande hanging on to top spot in RAC 101 poll
02 January 2009
Cape Le Grand and Lucky Bay remains the best place to visit in the west according to visitors to the RAC’s new travel website, 101WA.com.au, but only just. Other top attractions are closing the gap fast.
The Ningaloo Marine Park, the South West wine and food region and Karijini National Park are hot on the heels in the voting for the best tourism destination or attraction in WA, but the surprise package is Rottnest Island that has jumped up the voting to fourth place over the festive period.
RAC Travel spokesperson Kingsley Dawes said that with a month to go in the voting the competition to be the best in the west was still wide open.
“We’ve seen Rottnest come from nowhere to be right up there in fourth position and that could be because of the popularity of Rottnest over the Christmas period,” Mr Dawes said.
“The other big mover this week is whale watching in Australia’s South West, which is proving very popular with people voting on 101WA.com.au.
Mr Dawes said the voting for the top 30 in 101WA.com.au was very close and it was impossible to pick who would be up there when voting ended on 6 February next year.
“For anyone travelling this Christmas, I advise you to get on the site and have a look at where to go and what to do. And when you have been to one of the attractions on 101WA.com.au make sure you let everyone know what you think about it by voting on the website,” Mr Dawes said.
While votes over the last week were good for Rottnest and whale watching, other top attractions slid with Cable Beach in Broome and Kings Park both heading south in the voting.
“I think there are still several tourist attractions that are under-achieving in the poll including Monkey Mia, the Busselton Jetty, Fremantle, Broome and the Valley of the Giants in Walpole.
“Some people may have been to several of the destinations, others to none at all. We are challenging people to see how many on the list they can tick off and help them appreciate how much more of WA there is to see.”
“The site is all about appreciating the great State we live in and it’s free so people can use it as a travel resource to find out about where the best holiday destinations in WA are.”
