La Salle student wins top award

29 October 2009

Year 11 student Luke Bennett from La Salle College has been named the overall winner of the RAC’s 2009 Fame competition.

Fame is the RAC’s school-based road safety competition that challenges students in years 10, 11 and 12 to design and produce road safety advertisements relevant to young drivers in the areas of press, online and film.

Luke designed an ad about the need to wear seatbelts which was judged as the best in the press category and also scored the highest votes overall.

RAC Community Education Officer Rebecca Horlock said Luke’s press ad captured what Fame was about.

“Taking the topic of wearing a seatbelt and turning it into something that will drive the message home to young drivers is not an easy task,” Mrs Horlock said.

“Luke’s press ad is a credit to him and his school and it’s clear to see why his entry stood out during the judging process.”

Year 10 students Brittany Taylor, Shannen Kruper and Carla Torre from Mercedes College won the film category for their entry about alcohol and drugs. Year 12 student Amberley Cole from Swan Christian College won the online category using the same topic.

Brittany Taylor, Shannen Kruper and Carla Torre from Mercedes College also won the People’s Choice award.

“There was a high standard of work entered into the competition this year and a lot of strong messages for young drivers,” Mrs Horlock said.

“Hopefully everyone who participated in Fame now has a greater understanding of road safety.”

This year, more than 150 students from 12 schools entered the competition.
