Mandatory ESC welcomed by the RAC
24 June 2009
The RAC has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to make Electronic Stability Control (ESC) mandatory in all new passenger cars and SUVs.
The new Australian Design Rule will come into effect in 2011.
The RAC has pushed for the faster adoption of ESC in vehicles for a number of years as part of the Safer Cars campaign that it supports along with the Road Safety Council.
RAC Head of Member Advocacy Matt Brown said ESC was life-saving technology that should be included in the base model of all light vehicles.
“This is a positive move by the Federal Government which will ultimately save lives on our roads,” Mr Brown said.
“ESC is a valuable technology that helps to correct a vehicle’s direction if it swerves off its line.”
RAC however also recognises that the provision of ESC for some groups of vehicles such as small trucks poses particular challenges and would not want this to delay fitment to passenger vehicles, utilities and panel vans.
