Motorists should be aware of car jackings
22 February 2009
The RAC is warning motorists to be vigilant when driving in the metropolitan area following a spate of car jackings this week.
Two car jackings were reported yesterday, one in Malaga and one at the Mirrabooka Road / Reid Highway traffic lights.
RAC Insurance Technical Claims Manager Glen Walker said the RAC recommended motorists always drove with their doors locked when in the metropolitan area.
“Both of these car jackings were quite violent and the RAC would like to warn other motorists that they need to be aware when in their cars,” Mr Walker said.
“The simple action of locking your doors when you’re driving could be enough to deter a potential car jacker and prevent you suffering serious injury and loss of your vehicle.”
The RAC recommends drivers:
• Be aware of people loitering in cars parks – they may be on the look out for a potential victim;
• Be extremely cautious if flagged down or called upon to stop on the road-side;
• Keep windows up and all doors locked when at traffic lights. Try to leave a gap between you and the car in front so you can drive off if confronted; and
• Comply with demands of attackers by leaving the car as quickly as possible – do not try to fight back.
