RAC claim bill hits $1m - expected to rise

Western Australians have been cleaning up today after this year’s first big blow across the south of the State.

To date WA’s leading insurer, the RAC, has received nearly 1,000 claims for storm damage at an estimated cost of $1m.

However, it is expected this figure will rise to 1500 claims with the final clean up bill expected to be close to $2m for WA’s biggest insurer.

The majority of storm damage occurred during the torrential rain and strong winds on Thursday and Friday morning.

Early analysis of the claims show that the south east and east metropolitan areas close to the hills were among the worst hit while coastal areas have not faired as badly.

RAC Insurance Claims Manager Brendan Stocks said there have been a number of large claims including trees that have fallen on houses and cars and roofs that have been blown off by the wind.

“While we’ve had some big claims the majority have been largely for wind damage to fences and roofs and water damage to ceilings and house interiors,” Mr Stocks said.

“Our assessors have been working hard to sort through the claims and we urge anyone who has experienced any damage to their property to contact our claims number 13 17 03."
