Vehicle safety defies economic downturn

The RAC says Australian car manufacturers are showing that vehicle safety does not need to be sacrificed because of the tougher global economic conditions.
General Motors is set to launch a new small family car, the Holden Cruze, which has achieved a 5 star ANCAP safety rating.
RAC Head of Member Advocacy Matt Brown said despite the economic downturn, manufacturers were recognising the marketing benefits of safer cars.
“Australia has been lagging behind other countries when it comes to manufacturing 4 or 5 star rated cars,” Mr Brown said.
“But we are now seeing evidence of a change in their thinking as consumers have become more aware of vehicle safety and are becoming more discerning in the cars they choose.
“This is particularly so for family cars and for small cars which are popular with young drivers as a first car.”
Mr Brown said both Holden and Ford were now including the ANCAP star ratings in their advertising.
“The Holden Cruze will be marketed as a 5 star rated car as safety is now seen by car buyers as one of the most important factors in their decision making,” he said.
“Holden deserve some credit for maintaining this push for safer vehicles despite the global economic downturn.
“It has shown that vehicle safety does not need to be sacrificed and is, in fact, an added marketing tool for manufacturers.”
The Holden Cruze was recognised for its active and passive safety features as well as its strong structure.
It performed well in the frontal and side impact tests. A pedestrian safety rating will be awarded later in the year.
“The Holden Cruze is a small car and one of the safest in its class. It provides a safe option for Australian families looking to update their vehicle,” Mr Brown said.
“Anyone buying a car needs to remember to check the safety features because not all new cars are built to the same standards.
“The RAC recommends the purchase of 4 and 5 star rated vehicles.”
