RAC welcomes Mirrabooka Drive project funding

12 August 2010

The RAC has welcomed an announcement by the Coalition to commit $10million to a grade separation of the intersection of Mirrabooka Avenue and Reid Highway.

The project is one of the Federal election priorities identified by the RAC’s “Take the Brakes Off” campaign.

RAC Head of Member Advocacy Matt Brown said the project was the next logical step in improving the safety and efficiency of Reid Highway.

“Canberra had previously committed $10million to a grade separation at the Reid Highway – Alexander Drive intersection,” Mr Brown said.

“The Mirrabooka Avenue intersection is ranked fourth on the 20 worst metropolitan crash sites in Perth.

“A grade separation will significantly reduce the crash risk and deliver a major easing of congestion at the intersection.”

Mr Brown said the project was only one part of the bigger picture solution needed to give Perth an efficient ring road system.

The “Take the Brakes Off” campaign also calls for a grade separation at the Malaga Drive – Reid Highway intersection and for a widening of Reid Highway to two lanes between Beechboro Road and West Swan Road.

The RAC has urged the Labor Party to match the new commitment and repeated its call for the Coalition to commit to funding the Gateway WA project to upgrade roads around Perth Airport.

The RAC believes all of its Federal election priorities could be funded if the next Federal government raised Western Australia’s share of Federal road funding to 15 per cent.
