RAC welcomes State Government announcement on written-off vehicles
30 March 2010
The RAC has welcomed a move by the State Government to amend the process dealing with
written off vehicles, saying the decision gives people with storm-damaged vehicles an extra option.
The amendment means that people who want to keep their written off hail damaged vehicle will not
have it deregistered straight away by the Department of Transport.
RAC Insurance spokesman Glen Walker said due to the high number of written off vehicles
following last week’s storm there was a need to reassess the process to allow people to keep their
vehicles.
“Many vehicles with hail damage are still structurally sound and safe to drive. This legislative
change means that those people who don’t mind driving around with superficial damage to their
vehicle can retain it,” Mr Walker said.
“This is a common sense decision by the Minister for Transport.”
“Thousands of people across Perth have been affected by last week’s storm and this change in
legislation means these people can now rest assured they won’t be left stranded without a vehicle.”
To date the RAC has received more than 24,000 claims with an estimated value of more than
$70million.
