RAC welcomes national driver training program
29 April 2010
The RAC has welcomed the launch of the national keys2drive program in Western Australia, which is designed to improve learner driver skills and produce safer drivers.
The RAC, along with other Australian motoring clubs, was involved in the development of the program.
RAC President Alden Halse said young drivers were over-represented in road crash fatality rates and hoped keys2drive would help to reduce this.
“The Keys2drive program fosters the relationship between learner drivers and supervisors through an accreditation scheme for professional driving instructors and the provision of a free lesson for learners,” Mr Halse said.
“This is a great program and there is no cost to learner drivers who sign up; it’s just a win-win situation. The RAC would like to see all Western Australian learner drivers support keys2drive.
“Developing good driver skills at the beginning of the learning process is an essential step in creating safer drivers for life.”
The keys2drive program has three key components:
- An accreditation scheme for professional driving instructors which includes initial training, ongoing professional development and commitment to a keys2drive code of practice developed in consultation with the driver training industry;
- A free session with a keys2drive accredited professional driving instructor for learner drivers when they are accompanied by their supervisor (usually a parent of family friend);
- A website rich in educational information and supporting material.
