RAC welcomes new Director General of Transport
21 April 2010
The RAC has welcomed the appointment of Mr Reece Waldock as the new Director General of Transport in Western Australia.
Mr Waldock will also maintain his current role as CEO of the Public Transport Authority and take on the additional responsibility of Commissioner of Main Roads.
The RAC said it was important that the Commissioner of Main Roads role remained a statutory position.
RAC Head of Member Advocacy Matt Brown said the appointment represents a significant restructuring of the transport portfolio.
“Western Australia faces a huge challenge in meeting the mobility needs of a rapidly growing population,” Mr Brown said.
“To meet this challenge we need to ensure that all arms of government are working together effectively.
“While we need to increase our investment in building new roads and maintaining our existing road network, we also need to ensure that public transport is part of the big picture solution.
“With limited resources, it’s vital that we get the best mix of investment to ensure Western Australians can continue to move around their community for both work and lifestyle activities.
“Mr Waldock’s experience in bringing the different aspects of the public transport network together under the umbrella of one authority will be vital to ensuring the success of the new structure.
“We would also expect to see benefits for road safety planning and investment from the new structure.”
The RAC also thanked and paid tribute to Mr Menno Henneveld for his achievements as Commissioner of Main Roads.
