RAC win on airport roads

30 July 2010

The RAC has welcomed a commitment from the ALP to provide $480million to the Gateway WA project to reduce congestion on roads around Perth’s airport.

The RAC’s “Take the Brakes Off” campaign listed Gateway WA as the number one road funding priority for the next Federal government.

RAC Head of Member Advocacy Matt Brown said the project is pivotal to Western Australia’s economic future.

“The RAC has been campaigning for this project for almost 12 months now,” Mr Brown said.

“This project will deliver a more efficient roads system around Perth airport in time for the proposed joint domestic-international terminal.

“The project will help alleviate Perth’s worst congestion hotspot along where Tonkin Highway intersects with Leach Highway and then Horrie Miller Drive.

“It is also essential to cope with freight movements from both the Kewdale area and from commercial developments within the airport boundaries.

“This project will help take the brakes off Western Australia’s economy.”

The RAC has also welcomed the commitment to provide additional funding to complete the Great Eastern Highway upgrade from Orrong Road to Tonkin Highway.

The RAC has called on the Coalition to match the ALP’s funding commitments.

The Gateway WA project is among a number of projects identified by the RAC for funding by the next Federal government as part of its “Take the Brakes Off” campaign. Details on other projects can be found at rac.com.au/takethebrakesoff
