How safe is your car?

Safer cars save lives

The people in this car walked away from this crash. Would your car protect you in a similar crash?

The type of car you drive will affect your ability to avoid or survive a crash. With all other factors being equal, the impact of a serious crash on a driver or passengers will be less severe if they are travelling in a 4 or 5 star rated car.

ANCAP (Australasian New Car Safety Assessment Program) carries out crash tests on new cars to determine a star safety rating. Each car tested is given a star safety rating from 0 to 5. The more stars a car receives, the safer it is. A 4-star rating is the minimum level of protection recommended.

Use the ANCAP Safety Ratings Search to rate your car, or to check safety ratings before you buy.

If you're buying a used car, the Used Car Safety Ratings can help you find the safest vehicle based on data collected from Australia and New Zealand.

The RAC invests in ANCAP and the Used Car Safety Ratings programs to help our members make the safest choices when buying a car.
