Fatal and Serious Injuries on WA Roads is a joint publication between the WA Police and RAC produced at the beginning of each year.
It aims to summarise essential facts about road trauma, stimulate debate based on these facts, and raise the public profile of the importance of efforts to make our roads safer.
Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan believes that great progress has been made in road safety in WA, but there is still a great deal more to be done.
“The WA Police is the frontline of our state’s efforts to reduce our road toll, and our enforcement work has been extremely effective to date,” Commissioner O’Callaghan said.
“Police can only do so much. It’s also about driver attitude, good roads, reducing speed, wearing seatbelts and taking alcohol out of the equation.”
“A document such as this is useful in that it highlights the importance of maintaining our focus to reduce the road toll, and is a succinct way to see who is most at risk and why.”
RAC President Tim Shanahan said the document was an example of how organisations needed to work together to tackle the issue of road safety.
“The report tells us that there are still too many people dying and being seriously injured on our roads,” Mr Shanahan said.
“Everyone has a theory on road safety and what causes fatal crashes.
“Unfortunately a lot of this is mythology and false assumptions. If we are going to make serious inroads into this problem we need to base our decisions on the facts and that’s what this document provides.”
“In order to reduce fatalities and serious injuries we need to first understand the root cause of trauma and then work with the whole road safety community to tackle the issue.”
