Travelling and working in remote areas
This comprehensive four-day course is recommended for anyone who frequently drives in remote areas.
It teaches the skills and knowledge needed to plan and prepare for a journey to a remote location, including the fundamental requirements for survival in isolated conditions, remote area first aid, communications and navigation techniques.
It also covers the use of four-wheel drive vehicles in a variety of on and off-road conditions, basic recovery techniques defensive driving and vehicle dynamics.
Throughout the four day course, participants are actively involved in learning each of the skills being taught. The course culminates in a simulated journey where implementation of the various practical aspects are combined and practiced.
This is a most enjoyable and informative course which could prove invaluable to the survival of anyone who may find themselves stranded in an isolated situation.
The remote areas 4WD course covers:
- Defensive driving techniques (all road types).
- Journey planning and preparation.
- Vehicle and equipment preparation.
- 4WD vehicle systems and handling characteristics.
- Correct gear selection and tyre pressures.
- Environmental impact.
- Driving on and across slopes and inclines, and stall recovery.
- Operating in rocky terrain, sand, in wet conditions and crossing waterways.
- Advanced vehicle recovery in all situations.
- Correct jacking procedures, wheel change (including split rims) and puncture repairs.
- Plan and monitor food and water needs and usage.
- Dealing with non-routine situations.
- Physiological and psychological effects of isolation.
- Remote area first aid.
- Selection of camp sites.
- Navigation.
- Communication.
- Fire fighting.
Requirements: Vehicle. All course participants must hold a current and valid driver’s licence.
Duration: 4 days.
Certificate: On successful completion and assessment of this course the participant will receive a Statement of Attainment for the nationally recognised training package units:
