Simple car service advice

Start with your car's owners' manual.

It will have all the information you need like, how to check fluid levels, tyre pressures, fanbelts, how to change globes and all the various items that need checking on a regular basis.

You will need a few tools to carry out this work, but you don't need to spend thousands of dollars.

  • A few screwdrivers (both phillips and plain).
  • Some spanners (of varying sizes).
  • Pliers.
  • A socket set.
  • Hammer.
  • An oil filter remover (suitable for your car).
  • Jack and axle stands.

Parts and accessories

Your local accessory shop should be able to supply all these items and while you're there, don't forget to pick up some parts.

For basic repairs and maintenance you will need:

  • An oil filter.
  • Spark plugs.
  • Air filter.
  • Engine oil.
  • Transmission fluid.
  • Brake and clutch fluid.
  • Car shampoo and windscreen washer bottle additive.
  • A level surface to work on and plenty of light.
  • A good torch or lead light to see into dark corners of the engine bay.

There are a few basic safety precautions that need to be taken when working on your car.

  • Do not wear loose clothing that can be caught in rotating parts.
  • Proper protective clothing is best. Wear overalls with tight cuffs and protective glasses if you are working underneath the car.
  • Rings and jewellery should be removed before starting.
  • Always use axle stands when the car is jacked up.
