21 Unique Accommodation

Pelicans at Denmark

The choice to enter under "Category 21 - Unique Accommodation" appeared appropriate given the common reference by our guests to "tree houses". Here, majestic karri trees run to the Inlet edge, their tall canopies enveloping our Chalets to create a truly unique setting. Karri trees, unique to the southern region of Western Australia have been described by an "amazed" Bill Bryson as "some of the mightiest trees on earth, of consummate and singular beauty". Nowhere is this better illustrated than at Pelicans where karris are an integral component of the experience thereby compelling us to focus upon this distinctive character.

3 Major Festivals and Events Taste Great Southern

Taste Great Southern showcases the exceptional quality of fresh Great Southern produce and wine to the intrastate, interstate and international market. The festival promotes the strong synergy between food and wine. The 2011 festival aimed to gain exposure beyond the region to create awareness and ultimately boost tourism yield. The festival had two major objectives; 1) to increase visitor numbers and expenditure by hosting nationally renowned chefs at the time of the festival; and 2) to raise the profile of the Great Southern through media exposure. The Coordinators of the festival placed heavy emphasis on marketing the festival in the Perth market, and for the first time over east and internationally to attract visitation and inject new money into the Great Southern economy. Events took place across the Great Southern including Albany, Denmark, Mt Barker, the Porongurups, Broomehill, and Kojonup in a truly regional approach. The launch of Taste Great Southern was held at the Parmelia Hilton in Perth. The event program was robust and diverse appealing to both the high-end spend food and wine tourist and the family market. The events for Taste 2011 showcased the very best of Great Southern produce, and demonstrated the use of this produce through different cooking styles. The individual events also forged partnerships between Great Southern producers/and chefs and the greater Western Australian food and wine sector.

14 Tourism Marketing

Fremantle Prison

In 2010, Fremantle Prison conducted market research on the local, national and international market to try combat the decline in visitation. Research results showed whilst most people in the marketplace had heard of Fremantle Prison only half of those were actually visiting. Using the research results we created an innovative three month branding campaign to position Fremantle Prison as a fun day out for anyone, not just a place for tourists to visit. Radio, social media and outdoor elements were used to focus on entertainment, while print and online components focused on history and education. The campaign's two broad goals were to increase awareness of Fremantle Prison's offerings and encourage visitation to Fremantle Prison.
