Becoming a supervisor
Your role is to help the learner gain as much experience as possible before they get their probationary licence and start driving unsupervised.
Your learner driver will need to understand and comply with the road rules, develop safe driving skills, adopt a responsible attitude and courteous behaviour and also pass the driving test.
We have put together some practical advice to help you get started:
Keys for Life: A workshop for parents and young people
This free workshop is a joint partnership between the RAC and School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) and is funded by the Road Trauma Trust Fund. The workshop is available through the RAC and all high schools across the state for parents, supervisors and young people.
The 60 minute interactive session provides information on:
- WA licensing system, including what to expect in the Practical Driving Assessment.
- Four stages of learning to drive
- Tips for successful and safe driving lessons
- Role of the supervisor
- Tips on choosing a car
- How a professional instructor can make learning to drive easier.

Insurance
If you are going to supervise a learner make sure your insurance policy will cover your learner driver. Some policies have exclusions such as 'named driver' or 'over 25s'. Not all policies are the same so check with your insurance company.
Four things to remember:
- Your learner must always have their permit with them when driving.
- Your learner cannot exceed 100km/h.
- Learner drivers are not allowed to drive in Kings Park, Perth at all.
- Learners are allowed on freeways during both phases of their L plate period.
