Buying your first car

Ready to buy your first car?

Having your own set of wheels is going to totally change the way you live and the things you can do. But it is a pretty big commitment and there are lots of things you need to know before you buy.

To make things easier, we've put together some tips to help you find and buy your first car:

  • Automatic or manual? Firstly, check that your licence enables you to drive a manual. An automatic is easier to drive but it could use more fuel and it may cost more to buy.
  • Be realistic about your financial resources – don’t forget all the extra costs such as stamp duty, registration fees, insurance and a vehicle inspection.
  • Check out the safety ratings to make sure you’re getting the safest car possible.
  • Be wary when buying older cars. Look for one that has travelled low kilometres, has a good service history and is showing no signs of deterioration in the bodywork.
  • Check out the comprehensive RAC car buyers guide
