Make a claim

Dear Members

In light of the hailstorm of 22 March 2010 we have made special arrangements to handle your claims and vehicle assessments.

  • Welshpool assessment centre is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm.
  • Our assessors will be conducting rapid assessments of vehicles at this centre.
  • We have created a Frequently Asked Questions page to help with questions you might have about the processing of claims.
If you’re an RAC member, you’re covered for hail and other storm-related damage under your RAC Building, Contents and Comprehensive Motor policies.

DAMAGE TO YOUR CAR

  • If you require glass repairs for your car, you can arrange for your own repairs and lodge a claim with your receipts later.
  • If you have glass and panel damage to your car, you can replace the glass first and lodge a claim for the panel damage later.
  • Just remember to tell us about the glass when you lodge your claim.
  • Your No Claim Bonus will not be affected by any claims as a result of the storm on 22 March if you renew or arrange insurance with RAC.
  • We will waive any age or inexperienced driver excesses which may apply to your storm claim. Other policy excesses may apply.

PURCHASING OR RETAINING A CAR WITH HAIL DAMAGE

  • Please note that if we settle your claim as a total loss, your current insurance policy will end.
  • If you purchase or choose to retain a car with hail damage, please contact the RAC to arrange insurance cover as soon as possible.

DAMAGE TO YOUR HOME (BUILDING AND CONTENTS)

  • If you have received quotes for repairs please submit these with your claim to help us process your claim faster.
  • You may arrange your own glass repairs, or emergency repairs, to secure your home and prevent further damage. If you do so, make sure you keep all receipts and supporting documents, including photographs, so we can process your claim.
  • Please remember that an excess may apply to your claim.

The RAC vehicle assessment centre process

Your vehicle can be taken to the Welshpool vehicle assessment centre and will be assessed for damage. Then a decision will be made to either repair it or write it off.

If your vehicle is deemed repairable we will allocate a repairer for you to attend and obtain a quote and booking date.

If your vehicle is a write off you will be given three options.

1. It is deemed a write off but you want to keep it permanently:

  • Notify the assessor you want to keep your vehicle permanently
  • The assessor will explain the next steps you need to take
  • Important note: Some finance companies will not allow this option. Therefore, if your vehicle is financed, please check with your finance company first.

2. It is deemed a write off and you want to keep your vehicle temporarily:

  • Notify the assessor you want to keep the vehicle temporarily. You will not need to surrender your vehicle to us immediately.
  • You will need to return your vehicle to us within an agreed timeframe. We will ask you to sign a discharge form to acknowledge that you will return the vehicle within this timeframe.
  • Your assessor will notify you of the next steps

3. It is deemed a write off and you want to leave the vehicle at the assessing centre:

  • Notify the assessor you want to leave the vehicle there
  • Collect all your personal effects from the vehicle
  • The assessor will direct you where to leave the vehicle
  • The assessor will explain your options to travel home

What do we need from you to settle your claim?

  • Registration papers (if you are keeping your vehicle permanently we will return them to you after processing)
  • Finance contract details and payout figure (if applicable) in writing – your finance company can fax this to the RAC on 9436 5093

If you don’t have this information with you it can also be faxed to 9436 5093 or emailed to motorclaimsmanagement@rac.com.au. Please quote your claim number on any correspondence.

The RAC appreciates the time you have taken to bring your vehicle to the RAC Assessing Centre, it helps us to process insurance claims more efficiently in these extenuating circumstances.
