Teenage boy learning to drive with a supervisor in the car with them

Booking a credible driving instructor at the start of the learn to drive journey will help new drivers become confident for life, and not just pass the Practical Driving Assessment. Consistent, professional lessons make learning more efficient and lead to quicker progress.

Here are some tips to help you choose the right instructor.

Check for qualifications

  • Approved instructor: Look for a Department of Transport (DoT) approved instructor with a current driver’s licence. Instructors need to take a practical test every three years to make sure they know the current road rules and best teaching techniques.
  • Working with Children Check: Ensure the instructor has a verified and current Working with Children Check.

Are they experienced?

  • The right fit: Find out how long they have been teaching. A good instructor will have some hours behind them and will be able adapt their teaching style to suit individual needs. This can include learning pace, language and cultural needs.
  • Feedback: Look for testimonials and ratings. Referrals and word of mouth are great tools. Do they have a wait list? It’s generally a good sign if their books are busy – they’re in demand for a reason!

Preparing for the test

  • Confidence building: Confidence is a priority for safe driving, a good instructor will help boost confidence by breaking down each learning stage.
  • Defensive driving techniques: Ask if they cover defensive techniques that will help when navigating unplanned situations on the road.
  • Mock test: Check if the instructor conducts a variety of lessons, including mock tests on common roads used during the Practical Driving Assessment (PDA). This is a great tool to highlight areas to work on and ease any nerves.
  • PDA preparation: A professionally trained driving instructor understands the ‘test ready’ standard and will teach the right skills that will be assessed.

Choosing the right car

  • Dual control: The instructor’s car should be fitted with dual controls in front of the passenger seat beside the driver. This creates a safe and controlled environment.
  • Safety rating: Check if the car meets vehicle safety standards and any individual needs.
    • Check DoT’s website for the minimum safety standards for the PDA.
    • Check the vehicles ANCAP rating online. A minimum 4-star ANCAP rating is recommended.

Booking lessons checklist

  • Schedule: Make sure the instructor's schedule is suitable, if they allow lessons to be rescheduled when things come up and if they have a reasonable cancellation policy.
  • Access: Check if they can book a PDA in advance. This is one less thing to think about.
  • Collaboration: Do they encourage involvement from other supervisors such as parents, grandparents, mentors? The learn to drive experience will be more enjoyable when everyone is on the same page.
  • Packages: Choosing a provider that offers packages for lessons can be a cheaper option.
