Teens in car

Hanging out with friends is a major part of any student’s social life. As they get older, they are more likely to be spending time with their friends in situations that have some connection to the roads. Being on or near the roads is a dangerous environment, especially if people are not appropriately prepared for the hazards that might exist.

We have created a series of road safety scenarios that could easily play out between senior school students in your school. These scenarios would be useful starting points for teachers to use to engage their students in thought and discussion about being safe on and around the roads. The scenarios could also be applied to resilience education.

Ideas for using the scenarios

  • These scenarios would be excellent road safety ‘ice breakers’.
  • They could be used as stand-alone class discussion topics about decision making.
  • Group work. Split the class into 5 groups. Allocate a different scenario to each group. Get students to discuss the potential pros and cons for each of decision A and B. Have the groups feed their discussion points back to the class. As a class group, be sure to discuss how decision making can be influenced by the situation and peer pressure. Building resilience in students can help with making the correct decision under pressure from friends/mates.
  • The scenarios can be used to support and enhance the lesson plans created by RAC.
