In October, Perth hosted the 2025 Australasian Road Safety Conference. This is the biggest road safety event in our region. Experts, researchers, and community leaders came together to talk about how to make roads safer for everyone.
RAC was proud to be part of the event. We shared results from the Road Safety Member Priorities Tracker, a survey that asks RAC members about their views on road safety in WA. The survey has been running since 2020 and gives us a better picture of what matters most to members.
The results show that driver behaviour is a major concern. Members said that driver mistakes and poor driving skills are the top causes of crashes that lead to serious injuries or deaths. At the same time, many admitted they had not always followed the rules. In fact, 83 per cent said they had broken at least one road rule in the past year.
While we should try to reduce mistakes and bad choices by drivers, making roads safer also means designing a road system so that mistakes or poor choices don’t result in people being killed or seriously hurt.
Members also want governments to take stronger action, with 71 per cent saying governments should do more to prevent serious crashes. But only 34 per cent believe both sides of politics are working together on this issue.
By presenting these results at the conference, RAC made sure member voices were heard. Together, we can continue to call for safer roads and better outcomes for all Western Australians.
