Many members in WA feel unsafe riding bikes on busy streets— but safer paths and infrastructure would encourage more members to ride.
A recent survey of 330 RAC members found that only 13% of members feel comfortable riding on streets with traffic. Safety is the biggest barrier, with 30% avoiding bike riding altogether saying a lack of safe, comfortable and connected bike routes stopped them.
The survey also showed how better infrastructure could change this:
85% would feel safe on separated bike paths
75% would ride on streets with protected bike lanes
Right now, many of WA’s bike paths don’t connect well. This makes driving the easier choice, even for short trips. More cars on the streets mean more congestion and poorer air quality. To make cycling and walking more attractive, paths need to be safe, easy and enjoyable to use, and suitable for people of all ages and abilities.
WA’s population is growing faster than anywhere else in Australia, putting more pressure on streets. Investing in active travel like bike riding and walking is an important way to manage this growth, while also improving our mental and physical health.
The survey found strong community support, with 80% backing more walkable neighbourhoods and 67% supporting extra government spending on bike and walking paths.
