Spring is a busy time for native animals in WA, and sadly, many are injured on our roads. With more wildlife on the move, drivers are being reminded to take extra care.
WA Wildlife, a not-for-profit group in Bibra Lake, rescues and treats thousands of sick and injured animals every year. Many of these animals are victims of road accidents. The organisation runs a wildlife hospital, ambulance service, and education programs — helping give injured animals a second chance.
RAC partners with WA Wildlife, with staff and volunteers helping out each month. Support like this is vital, as without wildlife rescue services, many animals hurt in crashes would not survive.
As part of Rural Road Safety Month, here are simple steps drivers can take if they come across sick or injured animals:
Put safety first. If the animal is dangerous (e.g. snakes, bats, kangaroos, large seabirds), call WA Wildlife for help.
Carry a rescue kit. A box, towel, gloves, sanitiser, and emergency numbers can make a big difference.
Stay calm. Move slowly and avoid sudden movements.
Keep them warm and quiet. Place them in a dark box or bag if safe to do so.
