People who own electric vehicles (EVs) are very happy with their choice, showing why EVs can be a great option for more Western Australians.
A recent RAC survey of 1,095 EV owners found 96 per cent said they were glad they chose an EV instead of a petrol or diesel car. Many owners said they enjoy how quiet and smooth EVs are to drive. They also like spending less money on fuel and maintenance.
For 70 per cent of owners, EVs are easier to service and look after, while 67 per cent said they are cheaper to run day to day.
Charging at home is another big benefit. Almost all owners, 97 per cent said they charge their car at home. Many also use solar panels to help reduce costs. Two-thirds of owners said reducing pollution was an important reason for buying an EV.
Despite these benefits, there are still barriers preventing people from considering EVs. In a separate RAC survey of 380 people, only 17 per cent /said they would consider buying an EV for their next car – down from 34 per cent in 2023. Concerns around charger availability and higher upfront purchase costs were noted.
To address community concerns, RAC will continue to call for more action by governments to improve EV affordability and viability for Western Australians.
