The Stirling Range National Park is one of Western Australia’s most spectacular hiking destinations. Towering peaks, ancient rock formations and rare alpine flora draw thousands of walkers each year, particularly to Bluff Knoll, the state’s highest summit. But beneath its beauty lies terrain and weather that can change quickly, and consequences that can be serious.

On this episode of the Horizons by RAC podcast, hikers Robyn and Patrick share a firsthand account of a multi-day hike along the Stirling Range ridge that took an unexpected turn. The group had carefully planned their trip, trained beforehand and packed appropriately, intending to camp overnight between Bluff Knoll and Ellen Peak. They were experienced, fit and prepared, yet a single misstep late in the day changed the course of the journey.

As daylight faded and clouds rolled across the range, the group found themselves facing a complex and confronting situation in difficult terrain. Decisions had to be made quickly, shaped by weather, visibility, terrain and the realities of remote rescue in WA’s only true alpine environment.

A rescue crew was due at first light. For Robyn, the experience was both physically and mentally confronting. For the group, it was a stark reminder that even familiar outdoor activities can escalate rapidly, regardless of experience level.

Bluff Knoll and the Stirling Range have seen an increase in rescues in recent years, often linked to underestimating conditions, rapid weather changes and the physical demands of the landscape. As hiking continues to surge in popularity across WA, stories like this highlight why preparation, local knowledge and realistic planning matter, not just for comfort, but for safety.
