Crashes and other incidents on paths that are shared by riders and pedestrians are not well documented, which can limit the ability to design safety improvements.
To help enhance safety on shared paths in WA, the SafePaths project collects and analyses data through both video capture and reports made by the community.
SafePaths, which is managed by the Planning and Transport Research Centre at the University of Western Australia, encourages members of the public who are involved in an incident on a shared path to report it via the SafePaths website.
Combined with video of path usage, SafePaths’ community-based reporting helps to identify high-risk locations and behaviours.
Those who used shared paths are encouraged to report crashes as well as near misses and general safety concerns. The data collected is then used to inform the design paths that are safer for all users.
