On this episode of the Horizons by RAC Podcast, four roadside assistance Patrols came together to celebrate a century of helping West Australians when they need it most, and the stories they shared proved RAC’s Roadside Assistance has always been about far more than fixing cars.
Malcolm, April, Richard and Sean have spent decades on WA roads, from Perth’s busiest freeways to remote country backroads around Albany. While the vehicles, technology and uniforms have changed over the years, one thing hasn’t: the job is ultimately about helping people through stressful moments.
The episode is filled with stories that capture the unpredictable nature of Patrol work. Sean recalls arriving at a Bunnings car park where a child had been locked inside a vehicle on a hot day, calming panicked parents while bystanders rushed to help shield the car from the sun.
Meanwhile, RAC’s first female Patrol April, reflects on some of the quieter moments that stay with Patrols long after the job is finished; from helping pet owners to teaching a recently widowed member how to fill up her car for the first time after losing her husband.
There are lighter moments too, including stories about late-night lockouts, saving the day on Christmas, and the strange assortment of “universal keys” Patrols have used over the years.
The Patrols reflect on just how much roadside assistance has evolved over the past 100 years. Malcolm, now in his 48th year with RAC, reflects on everything from paper dispatch cards and map books to today’s GPS navigation and connected vehicle technology.
But despite the changing cars and changing roads, the patrols agree the most rewarding part of the job remains the same: helping people on what is often one of the worst days they’ve had behind the wheel.
