A small tour boat with a colorful ocean-themed mural on its side moves through calm blue water near a waterfront. Several people are on board under a canopy, and life rings are mounted on the upper deck. In the background, there are modern low-rise buildings, a pier with railings, and a sandy shoreline lined with trees.

A new family-run charter business is giving visitors a fresh way to experience Rockingham’s coastline. Launched in December 2025, Catalpa Charters offers small-group ocean tours shaped by generations of life at sea.

Each experience is designed to showcase the region’s rich marine environment while sharing the stories that have shaped its coastal identity, with a focus on connection, storytelling, and conservation.

An older man with a gray beard smiles as he holds two large, reddish-brown lobsters by their antennae. He is wearing blue gloves and a black t-shirt with a logo that says "Catalpa Charters." Behind him, a younger man in sunglasses stands on what appears to be a boat, with blue storage bags and a green crate visible in the background.

Having spent years exploring Western Australia as tourists themselves, founders Adrian and Jade now share the everyday magic of their own backyard.

Operating from Rockingham, the charters explore the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park and surrounding waters, where dolphins, seabirds and reef systems form part of the everyday seascape. Each tour offers a closer look at this environment, paired with insights into the area’s maritime history and marine ecology.

A close-up shot shows a variety of hands reaching for food from a large, round wooden grazing platter. The platter is filled with an assortment of snacks, including crackers, sliced meats, olives, various cheeses, and dips. The scene is set on a boat, indicated by the "Catalpa Charters" logo on a white panel in the background and the blue and white striped floor. Several glasses of dark liquid in insulated holders are placed around the table.

A standout experience is the Western Rock Lobster Catch and Keep Tour, where guests step aboard to learn traditional fishing techniques and take part in a hands-on catch experience. Running from September to May, the three-hour tour includes morning refreshments and a share of the catch.

For a slower pace, the Sunset Cruise offers a relaxed journey along the coast, with views across the Sound, Garden Island and the Perth skyline as the sun dips over the Indian Ocean. Guests can enjoy onboard grazing platters and BYO drinks while taking in the changing light.

A man stands on a boat, positioning a large wooden lobster trap over the side into the blue water. The trap is a slatted, rectangular structure with a rope attached to its base. The man is wearing a dark t-shirt, shorts, and a visor, and a distant shoreline with buildings and trees is visible across the water.

Other experiences include shorter Adventure Cruises through Rockingham’s coastal waters, as well as private charters for groups and events. From September, the business will also introduce seasonal whale watching tours during migration season.

For more information or to book a tour, head to the Catalpa Charters website.
