Just a short drive from the city, Banyowla Regional Park offers an escape from the everyday, and the Kaarakin Wildlife Experience, run by Off The Beaten Track WA, is the perfect introduction. This guided tour blends bushland hiking with intimate encounters with Western Australia’s rare and endangered wildlife, all while supporting vital conservation efforts.

An older man in a green jacket holds out his hand as a black cockatoo with orange markings on its tail perches on his palm, outdoors near a fenced enclosure.

The adventure begins at the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre, a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing WA’s iconic red-tailed and white-tailed black cockatoos.

During a 75-minute guided tour, passionate wildlife carers introduce you to playful cockatoos, kangaroos, emus and even dingoes in a safe, intimate environment, sharing the inspiring conservation stories behind each species. In Jack’s Interactive Aviary, cockatoos may even land on your arm for a gumnut treat, a guaranteed highlight for photos and unforgettable memories.

A small group of people, including adults and a child, walk away from the camera along a dirt trail through a tall, leafy forest, some carrying backpacks and jackets.

Next, lace up for a guided 3km bushwalk through towering eucalyptus forests, granite outcrops and winding winter creeks. Along the way, Off The Beaten Track WA’s expert guides point out native flora and wildlife, interpret birdsong, share conservation insights and reveal hidden viewpoints. The walk includes a pause on a scenic granite outcrop for their signature morning tea, complete with sweeping views of Perth’s skyline.

Importantly, $20 from every ticket goes directly to Kaarakin, helping protect WA’s native birds. The tour includes hiking poles, sunscreen, insect repellent, and complimentary access to photos from your adventure. The trail is designed to suit a wide range of fitness levels, and guests with low vision, hearing, or cognitive challenges can enjoy the experience with guided support throughout.
