Just over 30 minutes north of Perth, a long-running family avocado farm has been reimagined into a new distillery, putting the humble avo firmly in the spotlight.

For more than 45 years, the family has grown avocados on their Carabooda property. Set among 50 acres of mature trees, the site has evolved over time — once home to Aquila Estate winery in the 1990s and later a small café — before reopening this year as Nola’s Farm.

While the venue now focuses on artisan spirits, the heart of the family orchard remains unchanged.

The relaxed, farm-style setting invites visitors to settle in under the shady avocado trees with a tasting paddle, a platter of local produce or a drink in hand. A rotating lineup of food trucks adds to the experience, making it an easy weekend spot for a long lunch with friends, and dogs on lead are welcome too.

Visitors can also build their own gourmet platter, selecting from local cheeses, charcuterie and seasonal produce, best enjoyed alongside the farm’s spirits or a curated range of local wines and beers.

Leading the distillery is Nola’s daughter, Elaine Darby, a scientist, winemaker and award-winning distiller. Her passion for botanicals shines through in the spirits, with carefully crafted gins highlighting citrus notes and native ingredients. A standout is the refreshing Spirited Lemon, perfect for sharing as a jug beneath the trees on a warm day.

And of course, the avocados still take centre stage.

A must-try is the farm’s signature avocado ice cream — a creamy, dairy-free treat made using fruit grown on-site and available year-round at the cellar door. (Fun fact: avocados are technically a single-seed berry.)

When in season, visitors can also pick up freshly harvested avocados and other produce straight from the farm gate.

Nola’s Farm is located at 85 Carabooda Road and is open Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 6pm.
