Denmark’s Old Butter Factory has reopened after extensive renovations, transforming the historic hub into a community destination in the heart of town.
Originally established in 1928, the factory was built during a time when WA's dairy industry was thriving. For decades, it served as a central hub for local farmers, who would deliver fresh milk to be churned into butter, a staple product that supported both the local economy and the growing Great Southern region.
Nearly a century on, the heritage-listed building has been beautifully restored, blending modern design and functionality with the character of its agricultural past. During the renovation process which began in April 2024, the team made a special discovery, uncovering the factory’s original butter sign, which has now been reinstated and proudly welcomes visitors at the entrance.
Today, the Old Butter Factory is home to a mix of food, art and local businesses, nestled among cottage gardens and tall trees on Mount Shadforth Road. The precinct includes daytime dining venue Mrs Jones, Butter Factory Studios contemporary art gallery, and new neighbour Vasse Virgin, all contributing to the site’s growing role as a creative and social meeting place.
In October, Mrs Jones reopened with several thoughtful additions, including an enclosed balcony overlooking the treetops, a cosy fireplace and an elegant wine bar. The bar offers a curated selection of Great Southern wines, local beers and summery cocktails, adding a relaxed, all-day feel to the space.
The menu champions local produce, with around 95 per cent of ingredients sourced from the region, from eggs, meat and bread to seasonal vegetables. Cakes are baked in-house using local goods, and everything on the menu is made from scratch, delivering bold flavours and high-quality plates that reflect the region.
Breakfast favourites include the crowd favourite breakfast gnocchi, while lunch highlights range from a vibrant panzanella salad made with locally grown heirloom tomatoes to Piacun Farm zucchini chips served with a house-made green goddess dressing.
Also housed within the historic building is Butter Factory Studios, a contemporary fine art gallery, gift shop and working studio showcasing the work of 10 local artists. The gallery hosts regular exhibitions, workshops and events, and plays an active role in Denmark’s creative community.
With its abundance of natural light, old-world charm and modern touches, the Old Butter Factory is steadily becoming the community hub it once was, a place where locals and visitors can gather, linger and experience the best of Denmark’s food and arts scene.
Mrs Jones is open from 7am to 3pm, every day except Wednesdays, at 12 Mount Shadforth Road, Denmark.
