Dwellingup is an easy day trip or weekend escape from Perth, known for its forest swimming holes, bush camping spots and world-class mountain bike trails.
Now, visitors have another reason to stop in the tiny timber town.
At the end of January, couple Daniel and Tonia took over cosy café Rubie’s Place, bringing fresh energy and a strong sense of community to the much-loved local meeting spot.
Located on the main street, the café has a nostalgic country milk bar feel, the kind of place where you can slow down with a milkshake or coffee on the verandah while you plan your adventures.
The all-day menu features easy comfort food, including burgers, toasties and hot chips with gravy, alongside barista-made coffee, milkshakes and sweet treats like banana bread and classic vanilla slice.
But the real star of the show is the icecream cabinet.
You’re likely to find different flavours every time you visit, with the team rotating through around 90 options supplied by a WA icecream maker in Bunbury. Expect everything from nostalgic favourites like vanilla, rum and raisin and rich caramel to fun flavours like cookie monster.
For something lighter, the sorbets are made with fresh fruit, with flavours including watermelon and dragonfruit, with mango a firm favourite among visitors.
The cabinet also caters for a wide range of dietary needs, with several gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan-friendly options so everyone can enjoy a scoop or treat.
Inside, the café is set up for fun as much as food.
There’s a colourful lolly corner packed with old-school confectionery, plus colouring activities to keep younger visitors entertained while parents grab a coffee.
Rubie’s Place is open Wednesday to Sunday until 4pm and is located at 57 McLarty Street in Dwellingup.
