For 17 unforgettable days, the streets, beaches and waterfront of Broome become the stage for one of regional Western Australia's most colourful celebrations.
Running from 21 August to 6 September, Shinju Matsuri brings together spectacular dragon dances, waterfront feasts, live entertainment and cultural traditions that celebrate the town's rich multicultural heritage.
Originally established in 1970 as the Festival of the Pearl, Shinju Matsuri was born when Broome's Chinese, Japanese, Malay and Aboriginal communities united their annual celebrations into a single festival.
More than five decades later, it remains one of regional Western Australia's most iconic cultural events.
Across 17 days, Town Beach, Chinatown, Cable Beach and Gantheaume Point host more than 30 events that showcase the town's unique culture, community and spectacular coastal setting.
Festivities begin with a free Opening Ceremony featuring a Yawuru Welcome to Country before the much-loved Waking of Sammy the Dragon, a cherished tradition that has delighted generations of visitors.
The festival’s signature events offer something for every traveller, from the spectacular Float Parade and ‘Rock ’n’ Roll’-themed Shinju Opening Ball to the Lions Dragon Boat Regatta and the moving Floating Lantern Matsuri, inspired by Japanese Obon tradition.
At Town Beach, the Festival Hub keeps the celebrations going with free live entertainment, local food vendors and family-friendly activities throughout the festival.
Shinju Matsuri’s food experiences are among its biggest drawcards, from the bustling hawker-style flavours of Chinatown Feast to the highly sought-after sunset long table dinner on Cable Beach, where guests dine against one of Australia’s most breathtaking coastal backdrops.
Beyond the headline events, visitors can embrace Broome’s laid-back lifestyle through a diverse range of experiences, from sunrise yoga, pilates and sound healing sessions to karaoke nights, run clubs, lawn bowls, stargazing and art exhibitions.
The festival culminates in a free community celebration and spectacular drone show over Town Beach, bringing 17 unforgettable days of colour, connection and celebration to a memorable close.
