Dozens of square paper lanterns float on gentle ocean waves under a warm, golden sunset. The lanterns are white with handwritten messages and logos that read "Shinju Matsuri," with some featuring small drawn hearts and patterns. The water reflects the vibrant orange and amber hues of the sky, creating a serene and glowing atmosphere.

For 17 unforgettable days, the streets, beaches and waterfront of Broome become the stage for one of regional Western Australia's most colourful celebrations.

Running from 21 August to 6 September, Shinju Matsuri brings together spectacular dragon dances, waterfront feasts, live entertainment and cultural traditions that celebrate the town's rich multicultural heritage.

A woman with wavy blonde hair wearing a wide-brimmed fedora hat looks toward a large red torii gate during a golden sunset. A wooden sign hanging from the gate reads "Shinju Matsuri," illuminated by the warm, direct sunlight. String lights and round lanterns hang across the structure, overlooking a landscape of coastal mangroves and a distant body of water under a clear, bright sky.

Originally established in 1970 as the Festival of the Pearl, Shinju Matsuri was born when Broome's Chinese, Japanese, Malay and Aboriginal communities united their annual celebrations into a single festival.

More than five decades later, it remains one of regional Western Australia's most iconic cultural events.

An elevated nighttime view of a bustling beach festival market enclosed on the sand. The market area is brightly illuminated by warm string lights and features rows of white and blue canopy tents, dining tables, and a main stage glowing with purple light at one end. Outside the fence on the dark open beach, fire twirlers perform with glowing flames while city lights flicker in the distant background.

Across 17 days, Town Beach, Chinatown, Cable Beach and Gantheaume Point host more than 30 events that showcase the town's unique culture, community and spectacular coastal setting.

Festivities begin with a free Opening Ceremony featuring a Yawuru Welcome to Country before the much-loved Waking of Sammy the Dragon, a cherished tradition that has delighted generations of visitors.

Performers prepare a large, colorful Chinese dragon prop outdoors during twilight. The dragon features an intricate, open-mouthed head decorated in red, orange, and gold, with a long scaly body stretching across the frame. The team wears matching gray t-shirts with a stylized dragon graphic and bright red pants against a soft, gradient sky near the coast.

The festival’s signature events offer something for every traveller, from the spectacular Float Parade and ‘Rock ’n’ Roll’-themed Shinju Opening Ball to the Lions Dragon Boat Regatta and the moving Floating Lantern Matsuri, inspired by Japanese Obon tradition.

At Town Beach, the Festival Hub keeps the celebrations going with free live entertainment, local food vendors and family-friendly activities throughout the festival.

Rows of white wooden serving boards arranged on a table, filled with dozens of small, round, golden-brown bite-sized pastries. The gourmet appetizers feature different toppings, including some covered in fresh chopped green herbs, some dolloped with white cream, and others sprinkled with crispy brown bits.

Shinju Matsuri’s food experiences are among its biggest drawcards, from the bustling hawker-style flavours of Chinatown Feast to the highly sought-after sunset long table dinner on Cable Beach, where guests dine against one of Australia’s most breathtaking coastal backdrops.

Beyond the headline events, visitors can embrace Broome’s laid-back lifestyle through a diverse range of experiences, from sunrise yoga, pilates and sound healing sessions to karaoke nights, run clubs, lawn bowls, stargazing and art exhibitions.

Two performers dance with large, flowing red fans on a sandy floor at night, illuminated by dramatic pink and red stage lighting. A smoke effect swirls behind them under an archway bearing the brand name "Matso's Broome & Sunshine Coast," flanked by massive inflatable cans, including one prominently displaying "Ginger Beer."

The festival culminates in a free community celebration and spectacular drone show over Town Beach, bringing 17 unforgettable days of colour, connection and celebration to a memorable close.
