More than 2,600 students across Western Australia attended RAC Project Road Smart® this year. The free road safety event is for regional year 10 to 12 students and demonstrates the consequences of distracted driving, speeding and drink driving. Its goal is to help young people make safer choices as drivers and passengers.
The program travelled across the state, visiting Bunbury, Kalgoorlie Broome, and Albany in 2025. This year saw strong growth in attendance across all locations, with more students than ever engaging in RAC Project Road Smart®.
Each event featured a crash re-enactment, which has been filmed as a docudrama and showcases real-life emergency service responders from Department of Fire and Emergency Servies, WA Police and St John WA working together as they would at the scene of a serious crash. A local Police Officer from each area also shared their firsthand accounts of crashes they see on roads in the area and how it affects families and the community.
Guest speaker Robert Pike spoke about the crash that took his legs and the lives of three friends when he was just 17 years old. A representative from Happiness Co spoke about confidence, mental health and how to make safe choices when faced with peer pressure. Students also viewed video case studies featuring the personal stories of those who have been impacted by road trauma.
Since 2019, RAC Project Road Smart® has reached more than 11,300 students across regional WA. By sharing real stories and lessons, RAC is helping young people become safer drivers for the future.
