Young male getting into car with friends

Leavers is all about celebrating and making memories with your friends. But before you hit the road, make sure you’ve got a plan to keep things safe and stress-free.

Check your car

Before you leave, give your car a check-up. Here are some essentials:

  • Check oil and water levels: Keeping your engine properly lubricated and cooled can prevent breakdowns. Top up oil and coolant, and if you’re unsure, consider a check by a professional mechanic.
  • Tyres and spare tyre: Ensure your tyres have adequate tread and are properly inflated, including the spare tyre. Under-inflated or worn-out tyres can lead to accidents, especially at high speeds on country roads.
  • Lights and indicators: Check all lights and indicators are functioning. In low-visibility or night-time driving conditions, these can be critical for safety.
  • Clean windows and mirrors: Clean up any grubby windows and mirrors to ensure clear visibility when driving.
  • Fill up your tank: Having a full tank of petrol (or fully charged EV) before you set out means one less thing to worry about when you’re on the road.

Don't Forget the Essentials

Now you’ve got your car sorted, don’t forget:

  • Important documents: Bring your required identification like your driver’s licence and student ID. Print copies of your confirmed accommodation as well as car insurance, and roadside assistance details.
  • First aid kit: A basic first aid kit is a smart addition to any car.
  • Leavers essentials: Pack a kit with water, snacks, hand wipes or sanitiser, a small torch and a phone charger. A portable mobile charger is a practical addition too.
  • Download offline maps and music: It’s likely you’ll encounter a period without signal, so be prepared.
  • Sleep: Driving requires your full concentration. Make sure you get plenty of rest the night before you set off.

Mapping Out Your Route and Stops

Even if you’re familiar with the route, planning your journey and stops along the way is a good idea. Also, check ahead for road works or closures that may impact your journey. Plan where public charging stations are if you’re travelling in an EV.

Long hours behind the wheel can lead to fatigue, which is a major factor in road crashes. Scheduling regular breaks will help reduce driver fatigue. Stopping at a roadhouse or café ensures you don’t run low on fuel or snacks and provides opportunities to recharge.

Consider taking breaks at some of these popular stops to Leavers in the South West:

  • Miami Bakehouse, West Pinjarra: With two locations on Forrest Highway and in Myalup make sure you stop to enjoy some tasty baked goods. While stocks last during Leavers 2024, show your student ID to claim a free sausage roll and take a quick rest while enjoying a delicious treat*.
  • Pinjarra Bakery, Pinjarra: If you’re travelling on South Western Highway, this bakery is a must try for their famous pies and sweet treats.
  • Harvey: Along the South Western Highway, you may pass through Harvey – home of the Big Orange. Sitting on top of a 10m tall tower, you can climb to the top for a selfie and views across local orchards.
  • Lake Clifton Thrombolites, Yalgorup: Pull off Forrest Highway, stretch your legs and check out these unique, ancient formations. This spot is ideal for a scenic photo op with friends.
  • Busselton Jetty, Busselton: Walk or take the train along the 1.8km timber-piled Busselton Jetty. For a longer break, descend eight metres below the surface to view bright corals, sponges, fish and invertebrates at the Underwater Observatory.
  • Simmo’s Ice Creamery, Dunsborough: A refreshing stop to indulge in some locally-made ice cream—a sweet reward for safe driving!

*T&Cs apply (* 1 x Classic Sausage Roll (vegetarian option available) per Student ID being presented during 15th to 22nd November, 2024 available only at Miami Southbound location. Offer valid for a limited number.)
