Travel & Touring | WA Things To Do

Your guide to all the best weekly, bi-weekly and monthly produce markets around the state.

Browsing market stalls with a coffee in hand is one of the finer ways to spend a few hours on your Saturday or Sunday morning. It doesn’t get much better — or fresher — than taking home a basketful of goodies from the attending farmers and makers. Who knows, maybe you’ll even find your new favourite preserve or honey?

Support local and fill your fridge with tasty produce from any one of these WA Farmers’ markets.

1. Margaret River Farmers' Market

Opening days and hours:

Every Saturday, 7.30am to 11.30am

Location: Margaret River Education Campus
Great for: Baked goods, fresh fruit and vegetables and live local entertainment

Nothing is more satisfying than buying directly from the maker, grower or producer. And that’s precisely what you’ll get at the weekly Margaret River Farmers’ Market. You’ll be face-to-face with those who picked, packed and made the products, providing you with expert knowledge of their goods. Expect to find everything from Italian-style focaccia and sourdough to waterlilies and pink oyster mushrooms, even packs of ready-made dumplings, for sale. Visit in the winter months (June - August), and you’ll likely see some Margaret River-grown Perigord truffles up for sale, too.

2. Toodyay Farmers' Market

Opening days and hours:

Every third Sunday of the month, 9am to 1pm

Location: Gugulja Park, 140 Stirling Tce, Toodyay
Great for: Harvested honey, homemade dog treats and local crafts

Start your Sunday with an moorish bacon and egg burger and hot coffee on the banks of the Avon River. Breakfast comes courtesy of the Toodyay Farmers’ Market, held across from Duidgee Park on the third Sunday of the month (March through to December). Plenty of local businesses are there, some selling freshly harvested honey and homemade dog treats, others showcasing their handiwork with leather and clay. Make the one-hour drive from Perth to arrive by 9:00am, and you’ll have the first pick of the stalls.

Stay beyond the 1:00pm pack-up time and spend some time exploring the rest of what Toodyay has to offer.

3. Caraholly Orchard Markets, Dwellingup

Opening days and hours:

Special open weekends

Location: Caraholly Orchards, Dwellingup  or at the Peel Produce Markets in Madora Bay
Great for: Hand-picked produce

It’s not often you can get out on the ground and pick your own produce at the family-owned Caraholly Orchards. So you won’t want to miss the opportunity when their special ‘open weekends’ come around.

Not only can you wander the Birmingham family’s Dwellingup orchard and hand-pick produce to take home, you can also take in the country scenery as you browse the local artisan stalls, listen to live music, and dine on fresh hot meals. Keep an eye on the orchard’s Facebook page for information on upcoming market weekends, as well as a weekly guide on where you can find the orchard’s stall at other market events around Mandurah and the Peel region.

4. Bindoon Farmers' Market

Opening days and hours:

Last Sunday of every month, 8:30am to 12:30pm

Location: Bindoon Hall or Clune Park (weather dependant)
Great for: Coffee, cupcakes, burgers, preserves and handcrafted products

Less than an hour’s drive from Perth are the cheerful Bindoon Farmers’ Markets. They’re community-run and community-focused, with plenty of homemade goodies up for grabs. Pop down between 8:30am and 12:30pm on the last Sunday of the month to pick up some sweet preserves, hand-harvested honey or natural skincare products. The markets run year-round unless a large local event, like the Taste of Chittering, is happening the same weekend. If that’s the case, the vendors will set up at the event for a bumper edition of the monthly markets instead.

5. Esperance Growers Market

Opening days and hours:

Every second Saturday, 9am to 11am

Location: Scout Hall
Great for: Local fruit and vegetables, honey, preserves and flowers

Buy direct from small-scale growers and makers at the bi-weekly Esperance Growers Market. You can find them behind their fruit, vegetable, and baked goods stalls just hours after they pick, make, and bake their organic and low-processed products. They’ll be at the Scout Hall (near the yacht club and Taylor St Jetty) from 9:00am to 11:00am every second Saturday. Bring your own bags and baskets to fill full of honey, eggs, olive oil, preserves, and even freshly cut flowers. Then, when hunger strikes, pop into Taylor St Quarters for an indulgent cake and coffee brunch, complete with views over Esperance Bay.

6. Albany Boatshed Market

Opening days and hours:

Every Sunday, 10am to 1pm

Location: 256 Princess Royal Drive, Albany
Great for: Souffle pancakes, local seafood, breakfast and lunch, gifts

Don’t feel like making brunch? Let one of the many food stalls at Albany’s Boatshed Markets do it for you. Every Sunday from 10:00am to 1:00pm, the indoor market is a mixed bag of food options, from fluffy souffle pancakes and sweet crepes to succulent chicken satay. The boatshed has ample seating, so make your meal choice and sit down to enjoy it with views of the bay beyond. Live music adds to the atmosphere, even on the most blustery winter days. Once sufficiently fed and watered, wander the remainder of the stalls to fill a basket full of fresh produce, find some new jewellery or treat the kids to some face painting.

7. Albany Farmers' Market

Opening days and hours:

Every Saturday, 8am to 12pm

Location: Collie Street, Albany
Great for: Seasonal fruit and vegetables, live music

Stock up on seasonal apples, pears, figs and passionfruit at the Albany Farmers’ Market. Held along Collie Street in the heart of the CBD each Saturday, the morning markets (8:00am - 12:00pm) bring locals and visitors together over fresh produce, live entertainment and hot food. There’s a whole lot more fruit and veg here than at the more craft and gift-focused boatshed Sunday markets, with locally caught seafood, seedlings and plants, and meat from independent farmers and butchers rounding out the Saturday’s produce offering.

8. Kwoorabup Community Market, Denmark

Opening days and hours:

Every Sunday, 9am to 1pm

Location: Denmark Senior High School
Great for: Seasonal fruit and vegetables, local meat, coffee

Hot doughnuts, coffee, and fragrant Asian-style meals are favourites at Denmark’s Kwoorabup Community Market. They are guaranteed to be there week after week to fuel a few hours of stall browsing. The remainder of the vendors at the Sunday market—think everything from farm-direct alpaca products and silver jewellery to grass-fed lamb and vegetables—are subject to change. It keeps things interesting for the regular shoppers.

Pop down to the Denmark Senior High School (just to the east of town) between 9:00am and 1:00pm to pick up your weekly groceries and perhaps a special little something for yourself while you’re there.

9. Busselton Foreshore Market

Opening days and hours:

Every first, third and fifth Sunday of the month, 7am to 1pm

Location: Signal Park, Busselton foreshore
Great for: Gifts, food trucks

From 7:00am to 1:00pm every first, third and fifth Sunday of the month, Signal Park on the Busselton foreshore comes alive with stalls and food trucks. Head down at opening time to get the pick of the seasonal fresh produce, or hold off until lunchtime to make the most of what’s cooking. Follow up with a cheeky pint at the adjacent Rocky Ridge Brewing is highly recommended. If you’re bringing the family, skip the brewery and make the most of the nearby playground. It separates the park from the beach, yet another hit with parents and kids.

10. Broome Courthouse Markets

Opening days and hours:

Every Saturday (wet season) and Sunday (dry season), 8am to 12pm

Location:  8 Hamersley St, Broome
Great for: Mango and tropical fruit, preserves, vegetables

Broome’s Courthouse Markets are a regular weekend fixture with a very distinct flavour: mango. Stalls are brimming with the Kimberley’s most prolific tropical fruit, sold fresh, dried or blended into sauces, chutneys or smoothies. But it’s not all sweet. You can pick up a bounty of vegetables at the organic food stalls, too. Food trucks, art, and music liven up the atmosphere, encouraging people to stay at the Courthouse Gardens for a little while longer. Head down from 8:00am - 12:00pm any Saturday during the wet season (October to April) and Sunday during the dry season (April to October) to stock up on goodies and fill your bellies.

11. Platform Markets, Geraldton

Opening days and hours:

Every Sunday, 8am to 12pm

Location: Geraldton Train Station
Great for: Donuts, art, gifts

Every Sunday from 8:00am - 12:00pm, the federation-style Geraldton Train Station platform transforms into a bustling market space. Around 20-30 stalls are beneath the retired station’s canopy, selling everything from children's toys and tea gift boxes to fresh produce and Yamatji Aboriginal art. Pick up some gluten-free hot doughnuts or a sausage roll to munch on as you wander through before making the short walk across to the foreshore for a quick dip (weather permitting). Not swimming weather? Get those steps up by extending your walk all the way along the foreshore, up to the Esplanade, and back.

12. Bonus: Bunbury Farmers' Market

Opening days and hours:

Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6.30pm, Saturday 7.30am to 5.30pm, Sunday 8am to 5pm

Location: 2 Vittoria Rd, Glen Iris
Great for: Local produce, meat and seafood

Though not technically a gazebo-and-trestle-table type market, the Bunbury Farmers’ Market is an institution worthy of inclusion.

No road trip down south is complete without making a pit stop for fresh fruit, gourmet cheese and the perfectly portioned vanilla slice. The market takes a lead from IKEA in that you have to follow the arrows through the entire way to get to the checkout. Up to 90 per cent of what’s on the shelves and in the fridges is high-quality from local producers, including the meat at the gourmet butchers and fish from the seafood counter.

13. Bonus: Markets By The Bay, Dunsborough

Opening days and hours:

Every second Saturday, 8am to 1pm

Location: Dunsborough Lions Park
Great for: Handcrafted giftware, art, coffee

Sea urchin lamps, mushroom tinctures, and intricately branded felt hats aren’t your typical farmers’ market fodder—but then again, Markets By The Bay isn’t your typical farmers' market.

You won’t find many fresh produce stalls among the vendors set up by the Dunsborough Park Shopping Centre on the second Saturday of each month. Instead, high-quality handcrafted giftware and artworks by locals and long-term holiday-makers are on display. The markets kick off at 8:00am and run until 1:00pm, so preface your browsing with a coffee stop at Merchant and Maker. Then, you have the rest of the day to bay and cove-hop your way from Dunsborough to Margaret River down the coastline.

14. Bonus: Exmouth Community Markets

Opening days and hours:

Various dates between March and September, 8am-12pm

Location: Federation Park, Payne St
Great for: Art and crafts, giftware, preserves, live music

Tourist season brings an influx of activity to the tiny Ningaloo town of Exmouth. The line for a pie at the bakery runs out the door, and Federation Park becomes the site of a monthly Sunday market. If you’re in town from March to September, wander across the road from the main townsite to browse local artisans’ arts, crafts, giftware and preserves. Make a morning of it and bring the family along for the ride. The kids will love playing in the water fountains next door after a walk among the stalls, but unfortunately, dogs aren’t allowed.
