RAC has teamed up with the South Fremantle Football Club, with support from East Fremantle, to launch the first-ever WAFL RAC Derby this June — combining WA’s passion for footy with an important road safety message.

As the Sharks and Bulldogs face off in their 392nd clash, marking 125 years of historic rivalry, the partnership will bring road safety awareness to the forefront for local footy fans. On and off the field, the match aims to shine a light on how driver behaviour — particularly speeding — continues to contribute to rising road trauma in WA.

RAC General Manager External Relations Will Golsby said the WAFL RAC Derby is a valuable opportunity to engage the community on this critical issue.

“We’re happy to highlight road safety to footy fans at a time when road trauma is increasing – with speed a major factor in many fatalities,” he said. “It’s a timely reminder that slowing down saves lives.”

As part of the initiative, Happiness Co will also run educational workshops for young footballers to build awareness of mental health and how it can influence decision-making behind the wheel.

South Fremantle CEO Cameron Britt welcomed the partnership, noting the personal impact road trauma has had on the club community. “We’ve seen firsthand the ripple effect road trauma can have. This is a fantastic opportunity to educate players on making good choices.”

East Fremantle CEO Adrian Bromage echoed the support. “There are no winners when it comes to road trauma. We’re proud to back this initiative and do our part to keep our players and community safe.”

The WAFL RAC Derby promises more than just a great game — it’s a powerful reminder of the importance of road safety.
