Are your kids riding illegally?

In WA, eRideables, such as eScooters, are defined as devices that have at least one wheel, are designed to be used by only one person, have an electric motor and an effective stopping system, are no more than 125cm long, 70cm wide and 135cm high, weigh 25kg or less, and don't go faster than 25km/h on level ground when powered only by the motor.

If anyone rides a device on public roads or paths that is larger, heavier or capable of going faster then they are committing the offence of using an ‘unlicensed vehicle’ and risk having it seized and destroyed.

Even legally compliant eRideables have restrictions on who can use them. Children under 16 are not permitted to use an eRideable with the motor engaged at all on public roads and paths. However, they are permitted to ride low-powered motorised scooters that do not exceed 200w or 10km/h.

For those still unsure of the rules that apply to the use of eRideables, here’s a summary:

• One person per device

• Approved helmet required

• Lights and reflectors required at night

• Max 10km/h on footpaths and pedestrian crossings

• Max 25km/h on bike paths, shared paths and local roads

• Only local roads where the speed limit is no more than 50km/h
