Most RAC members support rolling out more AI road safety cameras capable of detecting speeding, illegal mobile phone use and seatbelt offences, with 65 per cent in favour of expanding use of the technology.
Fixed safety cameras were introduced on the Kwinana Freeway in Salter Point and South Perth in January 2025, followed by the Mitchell Freeway in Leederville and Stirling in June 2026.
As well as the fixed cameras, there are also ten mobile safety camera trailers around WA, which change location regularly. Four are based in the metropolitan area, two in Albany, two in Bunbury and two in Geraldton.
In a recent RAC member priority survey of 274 people, almost 90 per cent were aware of the cameras – a substantial increase on 67 per cent last year.
The survey suggested the technology was also reducing dangerous driving behaviour. Of those who knew about the cameras, almost one in five people had changed their behaviour in relation to driving speed and the same proportion in relation to mobile phone use.
Most members thought it was reasonable for drivers to receive infringements for seatbelt offences, including when a front passenger was not wearing a seatbelt correctly.
