For one weekend each year, Bridgetown trades its usual country-town pace for guitars, live music and a whole lot of blues.
Returning from 13-15 November for its 34th year, Blues at Bridgetown will bring more than 55 artists to the South West town for three days of blues, roots, folk, bluegrass, gospel and rockabilly.
The festival has been running since 1993, when local volunteers brought together the first event in just six months, attracting around 5,000 people.
More than three decades later, the idea remains much the same: bring good music into a welcoming country town and let audiences discover it as they wander.
Performances take place across venues throughout Bridgetown, from intimate indoor spaces to outdoor stages, with music spilling into the streets.
This year’s line-up includes Boy & Bear, Pierce Brothers, End of Fashion, Frank Sultana, Rachelle Coba and Nico Wayne Toussaint, alongside dozens of other Australian and international performers.
With so many artists across the weekend, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to find a new favourite or catch a familiar name.
One of the biggest highlights is the Blues Street Party on Saturday 14 November, when Hampton Street and part of Steere Street become a lively festival precinct.
Street stages and performers will bring music to the heritage-lined main street, while food stalls and local traders offer plenty to browse between sets.
The street party is free to attend and open to all ages, so even if you’re not spending the whole weekend at the festival, you can still drop into town and enjoy the atmosphere.
There’s more than music to discover along the street, too. There will be a mix of entertainers, from magicians and acrobats to fairies and hands-on workshops, alongside food, local wares and Bridgetown’s permanent boutique stores.
