Just a 10-minute drive from Cowaramup, Caves Farm is a wholesome new farm experience set on WA’s original free-range venison farm, Margaret River Venison.
Part working deer farm, part gourmet food stop, it’s the kind of place where you arrive for a quick look and leave with bags full of local produce, and a hot pie and coffee in hand.
One of the highlights is getting up close with the animals. For $5, you can grab a bucket of feed and meet the farm’s resident Highland cows, Poppy and Daisy. Kids can also check out the chicken coop and see if there any freshly laid eggs ready to collect.
Inside the farm shop, the shelves and fridges are packed with amazing venison products straight from the farm, plus loads of local produce and pantry items.
You’ll find everything from venison sausages, steaks, osso bucco and spare ribs to more unique smallgoods like crocodile chorizo, smoked kangaroo and biltong butter. There’s also a curated range of local cheeses, including creamy brie and aged cheddar, alongside pâté, house-made venison biltong, cacciatore salami and a selection of gourmet deli items.
If you’re after something ready to eat, the cabinet delivers. Think flaky pastries, croissants and Portuguese tarts, alongside a lineup of hearty homemade pies from chilli venison and red wine to beef curry, chicken, mushroom and leek, plus vegetable options.
The cake selection is just as tempting, with chocolate cake, carrot cake topped with honey cream cheese icing, brownie cheesecake and salted caramel meringues all freshly baked by their talented in-house baker.
Beyond the counter, you’ll find a freezer stocked with take-home favourites, including packs of frozen pies, family-size lasagnas, and ready-to-bake cookie dough. For the best value, you can also pick up one of their butcher boxes filled with WA-grown meats, from beef scotch fillet and lamb roasts to pork and even fresh seafood.
Round it out with a barista coffee or cold drink, grab a few pantry staples like gourmet preserves, crackers and condiments, and you’ve got the perfect road trip haul.
This is just the beginning of the farm's new chapter, with plans underway for boutique accommodation, an exciting new dining experience and expanded shop in the near future.
Whether you’re stopping in for a quick bite, stocking up the esky or letting the kids feed the animals, Caves Farm is a must-visit on your next road trip down south.
Caves Farm is located at 5103 Caves Rd, Cowaramup and is open 7 days a week from 9am to 4pm.
