What began as a local wildflower show more than 40 years ago in a small town some 500km from Perth, has now grown to become one of Western Australia’s biggest spring wildflower festivals.
The Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show features an incredible array of flora from across the UNESCO-recognised Fitzgerald Biosphere.
As one of only five UNESCO biospheres in Australia, the region boasts almost a quarter of WA’s native flora species. What makes the region even more exciting for botanists and wildflower enthusiasts is that the region hides species that are yet to be documented, all of which makes this wildflower festival worth the trip.
Held over two weeks, the extensive program attracts renowned botanists and scientists, well-known gardening experts and celebrities, artists, and educators.
Enjoy exhibits of around 700 different wildflower species, guided wildflower walks, hotspot bus tours, wildflower photography, community markets, workshops, and much more.
This year’s program includes something for everyone, from Botany for Beginners and tannin-dyeing workshops, where participants can extract colour from a range of local plant materials, to 4WD tag-along tours and a 4-5 hour guided walk through Fitzgerald River National Park.
Visitors can also take part in a guided group Tai Chi experience, enjoy the extraordinary culinary experience Feast in the Fitz with Fervor, and discover the flavours of the Australian bush at a native bush foods presentation with Aunty Dale Tilbrook.
The Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show program runs from 7 September to 19 September at various venues, with the main display held at the Ravensthorpe Town Hall.
