Pinjarra might be one of Western Australia's oldest towns, but it has plenty of new ways to keep visitors entertained.
Named by the traditional owners, the Binjareb Noongar people, Pinjarra means "place of swamp” and the beautiful Murray River runs through the town.
From scenic river cruises and award-winning local food to heritage attractions and adorable animal encounters, this charming Peel Region destination is only an hour south of Perth.

Whether you’re on a day trip or a weekend away – it’s hard to drive past the iconic Pinjarra Bakery. Famous for its award-winning pies, pastries and sweet treats, it's the perfect place to grab a coffee brewed with local beans, as well as a pie and vanilla slice (and a donut, lemon meringue slice, cheesecake and … well you get the gist.)
For a unique way to explore the region's picturesque waterways, consider cruising the Murray River aboard Mandurah Houseboats. Captain Alan teaches you all you need to know to get going, then you’re free to explore the vast waterways at your own pace, surrounded by wildlife (including dolphins), beautiful scenery and stops at historic spots, such as Coopers Mill Island – an 1840s flour mill on Culeenup Island.
Another way to discover Pinjarra’s rich history is at the Edenvale Heritage Precinct. Wander through beautifully restored heritage buildings, browse local art and craft galleries, explore the fascinating Roger May Motor Museum manned by enthusiastic volunteers, and enjoy lunch or afternoon tea in the heritage tea rooms, surrounded by beautiful gardens.
From Edenvale, you can leave your car and walk the 1.2 km Pinjarra Heritage Trail. Starting with the Liveringa and Edenvale Homesteads and the nearby St John’s Church, this loop takes you to the main street to see fun street art, shops and beautifully preserved heritage buildings including the old Post Office and Court House, and Exchange Hotel and then returns you to where you started.
Along the Pinjarra Heritage Trail, sitting pretty on the main street, is the historic Exchange Hotel. Established in 1866, the hotel is one of Pinjarra's most recognisable heritage buildings, even after its $5.2 million dollar restoration in 2024. Enjoy their award-winning ‘WA’s Best Country Steak Sandwich’ while overlooking the beautiful Murray River and the suspension bridge connecting Cantwell Park with the town centre.
Another surprise food option in town is Café Cherie - a charming French-inspired café that offers local homemade jams and preserves, as well as in-house fresh pastries and authentic French-inspired treats. For something whimsical, there’s Jarra Infusion, Pinjarra Fish n Chips is a great option for a picnic on the river, and the word around town is that Pelican’s Café makes a delicious Rueben sandwich.
For a final stop – one not to be missed – meet some cuddly and fluffy animals at Midway Farm Stall. There are plenty to choose from, including Jacob the Clydesdale horse, Phoebe the beautiful Highland cow and Tex the Texas Longhorn. There’s also sheep, alpacas, donkeys, a camel, a friendly pig, and much more. Enjoy a coffee and pie, grab some local produce and get up close with the animals, while enjoying a relaxed country farm atmosphere.
Pinjarra may be a small town, but it’s BIG on surprises and certainly worth a look.
