What was once a plain walkway in Baldivis is now a vibrant, high-energy space. The project, led by young changemakers, successfully transformed a thoroughfare into a fun an engaging hub that can be enjoyed by young people and the community. Building on the energy and spirit of young people around Baldivis, the makeover mixed creative design and road safety to put safety and community connection first.

Inspired by history and youth voice

The design of the walkway was inspired by local history and Mary Davies, a passionate and committed member of the local community and a passionate beekeeper. During several workshops, the Rockingham Youth Reference Group and other local youth worked to weave this "bee" theme into the area.
The result is a welcoming space filled with vibrant bee-themed art and pavement murals. New ground games also encourage play and connection for people of all ages.

Safety through creativity

Beyond the bright colours, the makeover serves as a vital tool for community safety. Road-safety murals act as visual cues to slow down drivers. They also encourage safer habits for people walking or riding. New seating and "chill-out zones" turn the walkway into a destination. At the same time, the pavement art helps guide pedestrians safely toward the library and community centre.

Built by the community

This was more than a design project. It was a hands-on building experience for the community. During a three-day ‘Build Week’, 39 young people rolled up their sleeves to paint, plant, and build on-site.

These participants learned practical skills in leadership, placemaking and how they can use their voice to create change in their local communities. Their hard work ensured the space was built by the people who use it most. The project ended with a community celebration to showcase these young leaders. The new walkway is now a proud landmark for the local area.

This is just one example of what happens when young people have the chance to reimagine their community. Each project is special, but they all empower young people to work together to enact real change in their streets and neighbourhoods.
